Under the RFU's "Game On" rules, teams can play a minimum of ten players in order to get the game played. Lewes travelled to Bognor with a small squad and were able to borrow a few players from an also short Bognor squad. This meant both sides played 10 man squads with the Lewes side being more Barbarians squad which present a few challenges.
The first half was tough going as everyone was getting used to each other against a side that had been playing together for a while. After conceding a few tries the conditions worsen becoming wet which caused handing on both sides and open up play but unfortunately Lewes was unable to capitalise on Bognor’s errors.
The half time talk was one of focus with Steve Bowie giving a clear goal to get over the try line and get back into the game.
The second half saw a much more focused play with multiphase attack as well the lads starting to click which included the Lewes try with a much more aggressive attack from Lewes. The second half saw some solid defence which Bognor found difficult to get through despite throwing big runner after big runner.
Man of the match was Steve Bowie for his work around the rucks which saw him take some big knocks and continue to get a shift in. Special mention should go to Corbs who played his first game of rugby and didn’t shy away from stepping up against anyone who found themselves in front of him.
